Sen Demnis Empty Sen Demnis

Post by GrayWatch Sun Aug 07, 2011 9:19 pm

Name: Sen Ishyll-del-Enthray-del-Ildan-del-Demnis

Title: The Golden Heretic

Class: Merchant/Rogue

Leitmotif: Guns & Roses

Appearance: Sen Demnis 306f65ca3831be9d856f6b88b278284b

Personality:
Sen is a merchant, a fugitive and a heretic. But before all of that he is a genuinely happy young man, whom doesn't perceive any of the former conditions as worth worrying over. He's quick to laugh, and forgives slights against himself easily. He's unapologetically greedy, but spends his lucre easily, both for himself, and for anyone he feels like treating. He's never had trouble making money, so he sees little reason to hoard. He's horribly irresponsible in any situation where he thinks his reputation as a merchant will be undamaged for it. He makes friends easily, but also parts with them without a second thought if the situation ever comes up. He has a strange obsession with gold as a material, rather than merely as currency.
He's not particularly prone to anger, and his first assumption towards anyone he calls friends is that of course they can take care of themselves, meaning he's not prone to step in on their behalf unless the conflict becomes utterly one-sided against them.
His speech is oddly...compelling. It does not stir the spirit to great heights or emotions, but something about his cadence and word choice tends to leave his audience hanging on his words.

Skills:
Golden Tongue:
Everyone knows money talks. Only Sen talks back. His way with words, given an attentive audience and no interruptions (or unexpected detours into the realm of rational thought) allows him to convince complete strangers to treat him as though he were an old and trusted friend, or as though he had paid a small sum for a minor "favor" when he has done no such thing.

Ear To The Wind:
Gossip is a merchant's lifeblood in these uncertain times, and Sen is skilled at picking out the glimmer of truth from among base speculation. Sen may be considered to already know any and all rumors circulating among the populace of his location within a half hour of arriving.

Gold Hound:
Sen can smell gold. Literally. Like a delightfully toasted crumpet with butter...
Sen doesn't mention this one. People give him strange looks.

Traveler's Mien:
The basic set of skills, tricks and practices that would be picked up by one who spends much of his time travelling, including but not limited to basic first aid, foraging, navigation, carpentry/wagon repair, animal handling, and a grounding in the more common languages and dialects of the land. He is no better or worse at these assorted practices than any other frequent traveler.

Martial Skill:
Sen is a practiced martial artist, talented with the use of a quarter staff, and bare handed. His favored style when deprived of his lacquered black staff, is an extremely close range style, that operates well inside the minimum effective range of most weapons and traditional pugilistic arts, making it difficult to counter so long as he does not allow distance to open up between them. With the quarterstaff he prefers to make full use of it's impressive range and light weight to harasses his foes into exhaustion before landing a decisive blow.
As he has sourly noted the few times he has had to try his luck against well armed opponents, both styles are relatively useless against anyone wearing heavy, stiff armor.

Why Waste Ammo?:
While worse than useless with bows, crossbows, blowguns and all manner of other ranged weaponry, Sen is terrifyingly accurate with thrown objects, provided they were not originally intended to be used as thrown weaponry. He uses this mostly for party tricks, but has found joy in how well a thrown repair-hammer discourages future attempts to "grab-and-go" at his merchant stalls. His skill is such that he does not actually require line of sight to accurately strike his target, and has been known to be able to strike targets with deliberate rebounds off of other objects on over half his attempts.

Equipment:
Durable Traveler's Vestments

Quarterstaff, Lacquered, Black

Wagon: A lightweight and dilapidated wagon of unusual design. It's harnesses are unusual, rigged up to be pulled by Maldin rather than normal draft animals.

Merchant's Wares:
Sen trades primarily in fineries and raw materials, eschewing practical goods, such as weaponry. At any given time Sen may have a variety of trade goods available, as well as a collapsible merchant stall, lockbox, the tools and supplies to effect basic repairs upon a wagon and similar. Unless otherwise noted these goods are kept with his wagon. Notably always includes at least 4 months worth of preserved meat and several gallons of water.

Runed Coins:
Sen is in possesion of 30 golden coins, inscribed with runes. A historian might recognize the denomination as belonging to a country that disappeared entirely during the middle stages of the great war. Sen has little understanding of the mysteries behind their function but does know how to operate them. Given a firm impact they adhere to whatever surface they impacted against, and their effective weight multiplies many times (to about 20 lbs.). Removing them only requires a sharp tap on the face of the coin, after which it's weight returns to normal and it loses it's adhesive properties. Fortunately for Sen it's somewhat rare that those afflicted with the nuisances figure this out in time.

Recent History:
Sen comes from The Aldish States, from Clan Demnis, a small but wealthy clan that exists under the influence of, several clans but ultimately, the Ishyll Clan. Nominally associated with the distribution and sale of goods produced by other clans within Ishyll's influence, orders eventually came down that it would be appropriate if a particularly talented vendor of wares, whom had been gaining some notoriety were to represent the Ishyll organizations piety to the Path of Cymr.

That is the story of how Darius, monk of the path, found himself being sold his own prayer book by the oldest acolyte he ever met. After a bit of....rough discipline, the child returned the book, and took to the teachings well enough. He showed little of the classic stiffness of thought older acolytes displayed. As the temple of Darius was centered around martial prowess the acolyte picked up some rudimentary martial skills, but did not seem to find the peace Darius did within the repetitive motions. In due time he traveled to and fro the monastery visiting other monasteries. Though Darius suspected he would choose to become a mendicant, Sen chose instead to join one of the artistic monasteries after receiving a letter from his family. Darius heard little of him after that until five years later.

At that time the monastery where Sen lived had been robbed recently of several magnificent pieces of art. Slightly later a high ranking official discovered the pieces of art in the possession of a dignitary of the Ishyll Clan. The man's position protected him from obvious retribution, but the Ishyll name was damaged. Oddly the dignitary reported that his investigation was aided by a tip from an anonymous monk who, tellingly, also convinced the dignitary to buy a supply of shoddy art for a shockingly high price.

Two nights later Sen, a wagon and two Maldin disappeared from the monastery, leaving behind only a note claiming he had discovered the light of Goldgood Goodgold, the god of Sen Ishyll-del-Enthray-del-Ildan-del-Demnis recieving startlingly vast sums of cash, and he had left the country to spread his holy word. Curiously the Ishyll main house reported a theft of a set of historical artifacts, but the case was deemed unrelated.

And Darius laughed.

Allies:

Zem & Wat:
Two Maldin of large size, these tremendous hounds possess an extremely friendly disposition, and just enough intelligence that anyone interacting with them will fondly think of them as slightly stupid.

As far as intelligence goes they are comparable to very young children. They can follow simple orders, and do simple problem solving in the pursuit of those orders, but can't conceive of new orders for themselves. They listen to, and remember, Sen's commands above others, but without prior orders or Sen's presence they are quite co-operative (though a bit less inventive) with whomever tries to handle them. They do however tend to seek out Sen if they don't see him for a few days. To Sen's everlasting frustration this can be as much as a week or as little as two days.

Physically a Maldin can be effectively considered a bulldog with the strength, durability and mass of a grizzly bear. Unlike a grizzly bear, by both bred-in behavior and training since birth neither of them will ever draw blood deliberately. Their mass and surprisingly gentle jaws however, are both perfectly suitable for restraining all but the strongest terrestrial creatures.

They would each average as a level 3 NPC. Difficulty 4 to dispatch, but inability to do actual harm reduces offense drastically. Average 3.

Very strong character. Obviously well thought out personality and a good mix of trade skills and martial prowess. Likely to be taken down by an armored foe but a rabid nightmare to lightly armored opponents. My only issue is with the level 4 NPC. Effectively this would mean one character could take on three other PC characters in combat and have a very good chance of winning. Pets like yours are far closer to high ranking level two's or level threes.

These skills in particular seem very... overly mechanical. They are rooted far more in "This should be a mechanic and operate as thus" rather than actual roleplaying. I could be wrong though.

The 'smell gold' thing is a bit outrageous though... any justification there?

Changing the actual weight seems a bit preposterous, IMO. Any problem with changing it to "effective weight", implying that the runes employ a downward force on them?

Other than that, I really love the idea of the character, and I figure you'd roleplay him very well.

But... Hetalia? frsrs BI?

Edit: The NPCs seem fine to me. I like the idea you've got for them.

Sounds good with pets edited to average level 3. Besides we can always trust you to not be unbalanced with characters.

As the intent is to simulate the greater regard his winning ways would draw out from NPC's I do not control, they almost have to be. Though if you can think of a better way to write this, then I'm all ears.

Comedic Relief is it's own justification.

relevant changes made.

Your just jealous I consistently find good character portraits.

Fine then. As long as it's understood the only reason he can smell gold is comedic relief, I approve of this character and associated NPCs.
