List of Inquisitorial Crimes/Inquisitorial and Conclave Law Empty List of Inquisitorial Crimes/Inquisitorial and Conclave Law

This is intended to become somewhat of a large, encompassing thread for discussion, so if it's even somewhat related to the title of the thread, feel free to post and discuss.

I thought of a few things after replying to Crom in the Union of Solidarity thread about the Inquisition, so I decided to write them down here to get everyone's take and sort of cement the ideas in my head.

First, the Inquisition has become something that can't be removed from the Conclave. It's too powerful an entity. Despite that, it is in no position to overtake the Conclave. The Inquisition is like the elite troops of the Conclave and the justice system rolled into one. Even so, the Conclave itself is even more powerful, especially since the Inquisition is not involved with the leadership (other than the leadership involving themselves in the Inquisition. See: politics), administration, trade, foreign policy, etc. The Conclave also has it's own internal justice system that can override the Inquisition, it's just that the Inquisition has the capacity to investigate, trial, and judge on its own and the internal justice system almost never applies to anyone outside the Conclave proper.

Next, when dealing with the Inquisition, I thought of using the term 'Guilty of Intent' in lieu of just 'Guilty'. The main distinction is that, if someone is guilty, the crime can be blamed on them. If one is found guilty of intent, the impression is that he or she wanted to commit the crime. When dealing with the philosophy of the Conclave, the latter is far more meaningful, since it would fully translate to "Found guilty of wanting to sow discord in the world, to abuse one's own powers and to attempt in some way to overthrow the very organization that is trying to prevent terrible things from happening." More simply, you are guilty of wanting to screw over the world, even if all you did was steal some coin from the wrong person.

This also means you can be found guilty even if you hadn't yet committed a real crime. If it's discovered that you wrote somewhere that you wanted to smuggle some illegal goods under the eyes of the Conclave in four month's time, you'll be punished for the crime regardless.

What happens afterward depends mostly on the individual or group of Inquisitors. Let's say you were in illegal possession of a magical artifact unknowingly. Most Inquisitors wouldn't find you immediate in need of punishment, but some would deem you worthy of punishment immediately. However, if you are not immediately compliant and offer up the magical artifact for confiscation and explain how you might have gotten it (which will be further investigated to see if you were telling the truth), you will be found Guilty of Intent with the charge of illegal possession AND withholding knowledge from the Inquisition.

The Inquisition has, overall, tried to be a tad bit lenient so as to encourage people to work with them. However, everyone knows that the Inquisition doesn't play around. Punishments often result in execution, harsh imprisonment, pressed slavery, etc.

Moreover, the concept of Guilty of Intent allows the Inquisition itself to get away with a lot of things it determines are crimes. An Arch Inquisitor can go right in and knowingly purchase and even sell magical artifacts illegally, as long as it is in the pursuit of the interests of the Inquisition. However, being found innocent of guilty in this case is by and large a VERY political matter, which is why only Arch Inquisitors, who have proven their conviction time and again and would likely have political allies, would really attempt this. If one does not have allies within the Inquisition itself, he or she had better have some friends in some high places in the Conclave who can hopefully overturn the Inquisitorial ruling.

So with all of that explained, here's some of my ideas for laws of the Conclave and Inquisition.

Rejecting Conclave Authority
Rejecting Inquisitorial Authority
Obstruction of Process
Withholding Necessary Information
Illegal Possession of Prohibited Goods
Illegal Supply of Prohibited Goods
Misuse of Magic
Harboring
Death of an agent of the Inquisition
Death of an agent of the Conclave
Harm of an agent of the Inquisition
Harm of an agent of the Conclave
Being Accomplice to Guilty Elements
Supporting Guilty Elements
Guild Membership
Guild Support

Work in Progress obviously, but it's more of that this will be updated as discussion continues.

I really enjoy this. It's high time we defined the Inquisition more thoroughly and not just through romantic language but with hardened fact. This is slightly off topic but I think we should make a point of taking some of our information and abridging it the way we do the magical system. Such as breaking down the Inquisition into a general overview, positions in the inquisition, laws of the inquistion (this thread), ect ect. Same thing for the Conclave.

That's the plan, especially since stuff with the Conclave is so split up. I was personally thinking of an organized mega-thread with all of the relevant information pertaining to the Conclave and the Inquisition, similar to the magic system.

WOOT retroactive justification for a side point in a short story I wrote months ago!!!

Also I approve of this articles existence, and I've actually been thinking about writing up a piece detailing the specific ranks of the Inquisition proper.

It's true, it's in the Conclave Ranking section. However, I was being a bit silly. I'm not saying you can't have any creative hand in it, I just had some, what I think, good ideas for it. I don't know when I'll put it up, so you can wait for then or PM me what you think or something if that's better.
