Of the Plains of Kantor, and the Wastes... Empty Of the Plains of Kantor, and the Wastes...

Long ago in the world that was, the Kantorian plains stretched wide, majestic, and green across the lands between the modern day Rivers Vold, and Sciras. A land of peace and plenty, many and powerful were the cities dotting the plains, great, towering, and monolithic, said to rival Great Avalanor itself in arcane majesty, through methods and magics kept infuriatingly secret from their neighbors, and in fact even from their own people for the most part.

Truthfully though, if the means through which they had so thoroughly and effortlessly bent mana to their will had been discovered, all their great advancements would not have saved them from the wraith they would have incurred for tampering with things better left alone...

For indeed their elevated magical might was not due to innovation on their part, but a discovery of a relic from a time before the thought of humanity even existed.

It was a group of intrepid young miners who first made the discovery, a series of great...vault of sorts covered deep into the rock of the spine bordering the Kantorian Plains. Massive in scale, they were never truly able to fully explore their discovery, for they were too besotted by the seemingly great treasures they had unearthed.

Jewels, the size of grapefruits, glowing with alluring arcane light, untold thousands of them lined up and down the walls further still then the eye could see. Swiftly the men grabbed as many as their arms could carry, and departed their find, riding in earnest to the throne of the local Lord, who just as eagerly sent word to his sovereign King.

The response was uncannily swift, as the King gathered a party of proven explorers, experts, and mystics, and made for this grand discovery personally.

A grand study was made of the orbs, as the Kingdom's greatest minds studied, pondered, theorized the properties of the stone, until a common consensus was reached on how to best put them too use.

Under the guise of a discovery of revolutionary new magics, the King oversaw a great renovation of his capitol , lines of power crossing and intersecting from one inch of the city to the other, at each section an Orb had been slotted in a place of power, and at the central keep, above and behind the grand throne of the King sat the single largest orb of the lot, twice and again the size of the others.

The preparations complete the King a flip of a single switch was all that was needed to bring light to the dark, to bring warmth from the cold, to communicate no matter the distance, and to give great stone constructions the ability to sore through the air like birds.

A great, powerful, and seemingly infinite power source at their very finger tips, the Kingdom grew and expanded, and became resplendent in its might, use of the stones cropping up in every corner of the ever expanding empire. Truly the future could not have seemed brighter...

All undone one morning a second sun rose in the north, a wave of disrupted mana sweeping across the world in it's wake. The eldritch light darkened for the final time, never to return no matter how the switch was coaxed, the air refused the most desperate pleads for comfort, all ties of communication were cut...and the then truly monolith skyships fell like the stones they were to the ground below, heedless of what their panicked crews did.

But even that sudden devastation was not the worst of it...no that came when a shard of black arced across the darkened skies, smashing into the Throne room of the King, and finally slamming into his prized jewel, renting a crack in its once impeccable surface.

A great rolling mist came from the crack, thick, and somehow terrible to behold, all those in the epicenter of it were instantly swayed to madness, falling on each other, and every other living thing about them in a mindless rage.

Swiftly it consumed the city, rousing with it not only madness, but the once sleeping power source of the people, who awoke with an anger that would see the world and those who had shaped it reduced to ash.

The mist heeded not the walls of the city, spilling across the plains, in a matter of days it had consumed the shattered Kingdom, sparing not a single soul it touched, and threatened to spread further still.

At such a time the deities of Ara`niel were not short on worries and concerned, the new undead of Nomen had survived their masters fall, spreading even to their previously untouched continent and killing their people at will. Before them all came the Great Spirit, leader of his people upon their landmass, baring ill tidings from the plains.

Humanity, it seemed, had unearthed a vault of Firstborns buried and forgotten for millennium, taking them from their warded prison and putting them too use. Rather ingenious yes, but fate had not been kind, and the fallout from the Fall had seemingly roused them from their slumber, and their influence was spreading rapidly. A group of brave and bold spirits had entered the mists, with the goal of ending the threat at the source, only managing to reseal and forever shut the defiled tomb before succumbing to the madness as well, at least managing some small good from their sacrifice.

The Great Spirit was blunt in his assessment of the situation, if the mists continued to spread the whole of the continent would be lost in a manner of months, from there it was only a matter of time until calamity covered the world, and all was truly lost.

His plan was sound and decisive.

He proposed a circle of binding, utilizing all the spirits under his command, and aided by the created gods, they would wrestle the presence building in the spectral plain into submission, there by halting its expansion in the corporeal plain, until such a time as they could undo the damage already done...

Swiftly the Deities were assembled, lines of battle drawn as they stood and looked upon the face of their enemy, for no mere daemon alone could muster such a presence. Unmistakable they faced the influence of one of the Pantheon, and together they barred its path.

Great beyond words was the struggle, as Gods spent themselves to contain the beast in the mist, until in a great voice of power the Great Spirit called out.

"STOP!"

And swiftly it was finished, the malign influence becoming complacence and sedentary, even as it's reflection on the corporal plain, the dreaded mist, halted its advance, boarders teasing the edges of the Vold river to the west, and flirting still with the Sciras rivers to the east...

Exhausted from battle, the spirits withdrew to deal with the thousand other micro disasters still raging at such a perilous time, even as the created Gods retreated to recover their strength, none left unmarked by their struggles with the Demon God.

Ignored, and unnoticed within the mists, stirred the corrupted then, the monstrous will of the mist having introverted into the many minds it had captured as it came to realize it could not win free of its prison through strength alone. No more...subtle measure would need to be taken.

Cut off from its brothers, save for the scant few dozen that he had accidentally awoken in his moments of delirious birthing whose allegiances and goals could not properly be counted on, the mist turned its attention to the very source of its undoing.

Humanity...specifically their faith.

As one, the minds under his command bent knee to his awesome might, converted on the spot in their madness, feeding his power with their belief, but perhaps not enough. No a great show of faith was needed if he was to free himself and his brothers...

So for now, he bides his time, omnipresent master of a land increasingly loosing it's mind, the elemental spirits themselves falling to his madness, wind wiping uncontrollably through the plains, rain falling upwards in places flowing like a water fall from the heavens in others, fires spontaneous bursting to life engulfing entire fields before just a swiftly dying, the earth shifting beneath the unwary feet, silently shifting and rotating confusing every path beyond all hope of recognition...

A place of the damned, and the mad, all who enter are doomed too it, save perhaps the fringes were the Demon can be resisted for a time, and a relative stability is possible. The rewards are perhaps many, for truly no place of Pre-Fall civilization is as well preserved as those within the Wastes, but to live in, or venture too deep into such a place is too court madness, unpleasant death, or worse still a lifetime of service to a manifestation of will as old and terrible as can be imagined...

That is decidedly kickass.

Compared to the idea that constant warfare and offensive magic tore apart the land, this is ridiculous. The Wastes are literally just short of uninhabitable.

I still would like to know, for the purpose of lore, what kingdom was there and how far its reach was, as well as maybe the location of possible ruins and the vault, etc.

Also, I've got planned two buffer countries in the west and one bordering Visnia and an idea for one bordering both Visnia and Kirath. They won't extend far into the Wastes, but they'll sufficiently serve as a buffer (at least in the east, it'd be good to figure out what to do about the west, unless Tyrvold just decided that the river was going to be the buffer).

Do like. And I'd been wondering for a while how we were going to get Daemons in there. A non-corpeal member of the Pantheon holding sway over the land so that everyone in it is barbarous and mad while daemons stalk the land sounds awesome.

Admittedly I should probably thank Chaos for his vague inspiration, his analogy of Chernobyl was what really inspired the idea.

Admittedly taken to the nth degree, but still.

As for the map it's something of a WIP progress, and I do have a basic outline for the Kingdom in question.

Trying and organize something out of it later.
