An Inquisitor and a Has-Been Walk Into a Bar... Empty An Inquisitor and a Has-Been Walk Into a Bar...

He had taken to drinking, well, moreso than usual. He already only had the bottle to live for, but things were just getting worse. All day spent in this damnable bar, the booze was expensive and watery, and a bunch of people were giving him a look that he didn't particularly like. If he had been more drunk, it probably wouldn't matter, but money had been tight...

He just had a few more drinks worth of money, and then he can wander off. Just a few more without anyone noticing him... Just a few more...

Vander was not one to drink alone normally, unless his job required him to play the role of dunkard. Ronin however, loved to drink, particularly in hole in the wall bars like the one the pair currently found themselves in. The kind were fights were acceptable so long as the tables weren't broken, and not to many bottles were smashed.

It was Vander's unfortunate luck to draw the short straw on accompanying Ronin's annual excursion into the nearest dive tavern on their off hours. Wearing simple tunics, and nondescript cloaks, unarmed save for a few carefully concealed daggers.

"First round's on you there Boss..." said Ronin, slapping Vander between the shoulders blades twice companionably, "I'll get to finding us a table..."

"Right, make sure not to start a fight until I get back..." replied Vander, watching his subordinate wade through the clustered and crowded tables towards a darkened corner, before he turned and began wading towards the bar.

He managed to elbow his way into a fairly open space on the counter top, tapping it twice firmly, "Two pints of Mead for me and my violent friend if you don't mind..." he called to the bar keep, hood pulled low so no one would see his blind eyes, and start asking questions he didn't want to answer.

He looked to his left while waiting for the tender to fetch his order, appraising seemingly one of many sad lonely drunks idling away their sorrows with a bottle. This one, however, seemed... familiar...

"Do I know you..." he asked the disheveled and depressed looking individual, "You have a familiar airs about you..."

Just one last drink, and he would be gone. He could go and make money in preparation for his next binge. Then two nondescript men entered the bar.

They didn't seem to want to show off who they were, wearing their cloaks low over their faces. That wasn't unusual for this place.

no

They held themselves like soldiers or assassins. Alain had been a general, he could spot that. That also wasn't unusual for this place.

no no no

Then one of them noticed him, said he looked familiar.

fuck

"No! I'm not Goldenhand! I just look like him!" Alain bursts, his voice not slurred enough for his tastes "I don't have a fortune for you to steal, I won't clear out any bandit camps, or lead any armies, or clear your cellar of rats! I'm a graying old man with nothing to his name, who just wants to be left alone! Not a war-hero, unstoppable fighter, or thirteen-foot-tall man who shoots lightning out of his ass, and definitely not Alain Goldenhand!"

Vander stood slightly taken aback for a moment at the man's overreaction, "Er Well... I was actually going to say you looked like a friends of mine... same jaw about..." he said, chuckling to himself in a bemused fashion, "But now that you mention it, you do sort've have the look of the Goldenhand about you... must be a right pain in the ass sometimes with all the fools and drunks about a place such as this..."

He plopped down into a stool next to the man at that, waving the serving girl over to Ronin's table in the back, as said inquisitor upended a few chairs, relieving them, and the table they sat at, of their occupants, effectively claiming their spot as his own.

"Singularly overrated fellow to be associated with if I do say so myself... Man got lucky more times than anything else, and people ate it up as they're want to do," said Vander, before waving the bar keep over, "A round of your finest malt liquor for me and my good friend here sir," he called motioning to Alain, before flipping the barkeep a golden coin, eyes still thoroughly hidden by his hood, not quite turning to look at anything his attention seemed to be focused on.

"Overrated... Yeah... he really was." Alain sighs into his almost empty tankard.

"He got lucky, mostly. He wasn't a good soldier, or a good commander. He got the position because everyone higher rank than him had run away or died, and everyone better suited refused to step up. All he was good at was weighing a human life, and convincing them all... convincing them to just throw their lives away... like bugs. Good thing I'm not him, or my life would be a wreck..."

The tankard is upended, the last of the swill flowing down the back of his throat. "Thanks for buying me more, I guess. I don't know why you would."

Vander chuckled just a touch at that, patently ignoring the man's melodrama for what it was worth, "You looked as though you could use another one, or two really..." he said, before motioning back to Ronin, who seemed to have one man in a headlock at the moment, alternating between downing a flagon and punching him in the face, "And unlike my associate I prefer talking to strangers in taverns over flooring them."

He leaned forward in his seat at that, downing a mouthful of sweet sweet... slightly watered down ale, "I will say for what it's worth, making those kinds of calls in those kinds of situations is not an easy thing to do, and for a better or worse, men such as Goldenhand should not be dismissed for doing a job that needed doing and no one else wanted to do..."

He chuckled again shaking his head dismissively, "Ah, but here I am rambling away, and we haven't even been properly introduced beyond you not being Sir Goldenhand."

He turned slightly, offering the older man his hand, "Vander is my name stranger... for what it's worth to you."

"I could use many more than one or two, to be frank. My name, however, is... uhh... Jakob... Silver... Mead? Jakob Silvermead, yeah. By the way... what... was that about your friend 'flooring' people?"

This is the seventh strangest conversation I've ever had, but why won't he just leave?! He does have money though, and money means booze...
