History and Knowledge Empty History and Knowledge

History is written by the victors. Knowledge is power.

These are two common proverbs we hear and are the guiding line of thought for this post. Everyone knows history is never everything it seems. When we are children we are taught to believe that Columbus discovered America, the Pilgrims arrived in the New World, befriended the Indians and celebrated Thanksgiving. However as we grow a bit older we learn that in fact Columbus was a brutal slaver and genocidal maniac, the settlers of the New World are responsible for the near extinction of millions of native peoples, and that we murdered Pocahontas.

History is an incredibly complicated and the mainstream version is often completely painted in black and white. Real history is almost never simple. And thus I suggest we act on that in RoKK. The Conclave is the closest thing this broken world has to a super power. It is also the largest scholarly organization in the world. Thus, we must assume that the traditional history of the people that permeates the world will be the history of the Conclave. As mentioned history is written by the victors. But the history of the victors is rarely the full and unblemished history. Furthermore, the Conclave recognizes that knowledge is power and jealously guards its secrets and works constantly to keep themselves the most informed of all people.

A great example of this is Morrowind – Elder Scrolls. Often an adventurer is forced to go through countless rendition of events and forced to pick through tidbits of knowledge to find the truth of an event or truth behind a certain item or ritual.

Point being I’d like to consider using knowledge as a sort of reward for roleplayers and keep it isolated to those individuals who learn it. Nothing so far as the traditional world map, these cities are here, this king rules that, and this magical mechanic works this way.

But information such as the (hypothetical) Ace of Diamonds is actually one of the members of the Conclave’s Master Council or that the lord of some city is actually a death cultist, or that some great victory against a horrible monster the Conclave claims to have killed had nothing to do with them, or that one of the “evil magicians” they killed was really a good man trying to earn freedom for his fellows.

Basically I’d like to have more layers and depth to our history and more focus on knowledge as a weapon or a reward.

I really like this, and I always wanted to write little short stories about history that people would randomly find, slowly learning about the true depth of the world around them.

One thing though:

I'm working on the concept for "Archivists", which is actually a neutral organization that's out to discover the precious history that was lost to the world. They've made deals with the Conclave to house all magical content they find there, and are allowed to have their own library on the island, as well as some overseas libraries that don't stock magical archives. Small in number, but with a large goal, and are generally uninterested with major politics other than being completely neutral to everyone so they can be unmolested in their search.

Actually I've had that exact same idea. I'll shoot you a PM detailing my own idea though I'm glad we're thinking along the same lines.
