Thoughts on Meta-magic
So here are my thoughts on meta-magic and some of the steps necessary to turn it into a full-fledged system.
Meta-magic is the art of manipulating spells (obviously enough). As outlined in BI's article, the steps of meta-magic are Access, Alteration and Enaction. A mage using meta-magic must use a spell that can override a spell already cast, allowing the mage to alter its components and then release the spell with the new changes.
The difference will be that meta-magic is not a specific branch separated from other forms of magic. Meta-magic will be a subsection of traditional magic. There will also no longer be random gray portals and some such that once defined the application of meta-magic.
Users of meta-magic must be incredibly skilled, incredibly knowledgeable of magic, or have a very acute Sense. This is necessary to understand the spell they wish to manipulate and to interact with that spell.
Beyond that, the only changes I feel should be made is just a bit of expanding on what BI had to make it a formal system.

I'd actually be interested in that being your own class of magic but to not make it mutually exclusive to traditional elemental magic.

I'd like to see characters whose sole purpose is literally just to fuck with other peoples magic. At the same time I wouldn't be opposed to masters of elemental magic being capable of preforming some meta-magic of their own as it would make sense at their levels that they could do that to other elemental spells.

True, that sounds pretty good. That was my intent.
There's also some self-defense types of magic that don't actively manipulate spells, they are just used to break apart spells. It's different than Meta-magic.

Subconsciously I was grouping that in with a component of meta-magic as it involved a manipulation of spells even if it was just to the degree that it disrupted them like a Null would. What did you want to call that kind of magic? (Yell spell breakers anyone? )

Just some form of Self Defense magic. It's mostly setting up walls of mana and colliding the spells together to cancel them out. Sazil has a staff that does such a thing, except it also carries some kinetic force with it. You can see what it does in the chapter I wrote that's hosted here.

Alright. Well let's try and get a post that combines the little we established here with BI's post and get MN's approval on it so we can move meta-magic out of RnD.

Alright. I'll write up a formal system based on these thoughts once MN gets his input in, then we can discuss that and move it out of R&D.
