Location Forums

Post by CromTheConqueror on Mon May 09, 2011 7:00 pm

I think locations of our world should work similiar to this.

Forum: Ara'niel

Subforum: Country

Subforum: Districts of the country. This would vary from nation to nation. Imperator is likely to have very organized named districts whereas another country might merely less organized and more generalized areas.

Subforum: Major locations/cities/fortresses of the district.

Subforum: notable locations/villages/towns of the major location area.

Subforum: Local location near the given village or town or notable location.

Example:

Ara'niel --> Imperator --> Capital Province --> Imperia --> Wallacebern --> Twineford Mine

This is pretty much how we want things to work already with the "Visions of the Future" thing. I suppose we should go ahead and start on it to get it working, but to do so we'll have to change up "The Land and Its People".

Where should we put things about culture, for instance? Should that be located in another forum or in a sticky/announcement thread for each country/location/etc.? I'm leaning more towards the latter. If we do do that, then all of the small articles on different parts of an area's culture should be revised and placed in one culture megathread with a table of contents IMO.

Thoughts?

Posting again to bring attention to this:

Everyone who has a nation, go ahead and post what you have for it so far and we'll expand on it later. I'll then go ahead and set up a subforum testbed in the Visions of the Future section that will display all of this.

Also, I had a thought to include an option of Geographical or Political browsing, so you could choose which one you want to look at. I'll mess with this at some other point.

Right now, what we'll have is:

Ara'niel -> Countries

Country -> Regions

Region -> Important Areas & Important Places

Important Area -> Important Places

Important Place -> Local Areas of Notice

You should only really worry on getting down the regions and the important places first, though if you have more that's great.

Within each "Important Place", there will be threads or subforums unique to them that flesh out the area. For example, there will be a thread for each building of commerce, each residential complex, etc. within each region subforum of the city, and the threads in the city's section will consist of the town's defenses (if any) and a Enter/Exit thread.

This isn't super important right now, but it's what I've got on the subject thus far. Just give me regions for each of your countries and some important places. I'd like you all to do this here so I don't have to dig it up myself and set up the new subforums for it.

Aight. Honestly I just figured we'd have a overview forum (like general boared and realms of kar'kaish roleplaying) called Enter Realms of Kar'Kaish, then have one forum labeled "Ara'niel" (ideally this would be organized by continent if we felt the need to add more later). Then just go from there with the location organizer mentioned above. This would be where we roleplay in with our characters. All of the land info would remain in its current location as is to serve as a big information overview forum.

Alright.

Also, one of the plans I had involved having a large image of the world map where you could click and it would lead you to the nation you clicked on. I had a working prototype on darkbb that I can portm but the final version should probably be in flash.

Sounds cool. We should make one map that switches to the information forum of the country too.

Oh, I actually misread what you said before, about the land info. I thought you agreed it would be in the roleplaying section as an information reference. The idea was a megathread with a table of contents and hyperlinks to the correct page and whatnot.

If not, we should at least have a thread that hyperlinks to the relevant information in its current location.

We should just skip the flash and jump right to HTML5. Youtube finally did even. It is the way of the future. DOWN WITH FLASH AND IT'S CRAPPY PLUGINS CRASHING ALL THE TIME!

Anyway, enough of that. I don't know if you remember talking to me earlier this year about an organizational method for RP world management almost identical to this one, but it seems to have been suggested twice now. We should probably just jump right into it. I don't know if it's possible to create a new subforum and then move a subforum within the same location INTO the new forum or not (ie: can you add in new subforum levels between existing levels?). If you CAN'T do that, then that means that we will pretty much have to have all the major organization of all the locations on Ara'niel before we implement it, so perhaps an R&D thread with suggested organization/tier-ing of all existing locations?

From what I remember from my stint making a site on forumotion it is really easy to do that sort of thing.

Can you make something with html5 that's interactive, parts of the picture raise up, displays more information if you mouse over stuff, etc.? I don't recall being able to do that with html, but I do know that it's easy with Flash.

I'll be testing how many subforum extensions we can have today, and will report back.

I'm not sure on the HTML5 part. I know that the whole point was that it was supposed to basically replace flash in a lot of places, but I don't know if it was just for video playback or for other kinds of flash stuff. I'll get back to you on it.

Alright, thanks. That's why I said it should be in Flash, because I want it to be very interactive and have moving bits. Knowing how many Flash games there are out there, it shouldn't be hard at all. Maybe a Java app would work, but I think that would probably be too much.

Can we go ahead and set these forums up? If Chaos doesn't want to I'm more than willing to do it for him. I set them up on my old warcraft RP site and rather enjoyed doing so.

I would write a description of the place instead of saying "regions" "important locations" ect.

But when people leave, say, Viga, they're not suddenly at another important location, they're in the general region, so the need for that is still necessary.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you. Could you give an example of what you mean?

Here gimme forum permission to do an example of it with the Impereich. I've got a bit of a fetish for this and have had it visualized in my head for a while.

You've been given Administration Rank (since I believe that's the rank necessary to mess with the forum) in order to do this.

I made some more countries. Go ahead and actually develop one of them so I can see what you meant, don't bother trying to make the entire system in one go.

I think I get the idea now, but more development would be nice to solidify the look. I find it preferable to my original approach. Comments from anyone else?
